Our local school systems are headed back to school this week and our Owensboro college kids are getting ready to head to school as well. School zones will be crowded again in the mornings. Kids who have been sleeping past noon will be groggy-eyed and tired for a couple of weeks.

Three hours, two events remind us of our mission
Tuesday was one of those days. It began early with rain that dumped buckets all over our city and our farms. At the office, things just were not hitting on all cylinders. It seemed all of the work we were putting out was just not flowing well. We were dealing with several issues and deadlines that were approaching too quickly.
Take advantage of the Red Tape Reduction program
At Thursday’s Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce Rooster Booster Breakfast, we announced Governor Bevin has launched a new initiative entitled “Red Tape Reduction.” This initiative is an effort to attack the problem of excessive or unnecessary state government regulations.
Internships make a difference for the student and the business
At the close of business last week, our staff walked out as together as we usually do on Fridays. This time, we said goodbye to one of our staff who is moving on to a new adventure and a great opportunity.
ROMP building a niche for community growth
This week, Owensboro rolls out the red carpet to visitors from all over the world as the International Bluegrass Music Museum hosts ROMP. Twenty five thousand people will gather at our beautiful Yellow Creek Park to listen to music and enjoy one of the up-and-coming music festivals in the U.S. This event is one our teenagers will attend and brag about to friends when they tell them how cool their hometown is.
Chamber Young Professionals continues to grow
As the summer months approach, we reflect on business through 2016 and conversations of budgets and projections are of weekly topics around the office. This, too, is a topic for the Chamber Young Professionals. Since re-launching CYP in January 2016, membership numbers and interest levels are soaring — pushing triple digits for the first time in recent years. While this is the case, growth is still on the horizon.
Veteran tribute another remarkable community trait
Tomorrow, on the 72nd Anniversary of D-day, our community will cheer on four of its World War II veterans who are being escorted to Washington D.C. on an Honor Flight. We heard from Sheriff Keith Cain that the numbers on the flights are dwindling as we lose more and more of our own who served in World War II.
Riverboat is an example of growth opportunities
Friday After 5 kicked off the summer season on a rainy Friday. But it was met with more sunny news for Owensboro. B and B Riverboats announced on Friday that they were running a weekend of cruises here in October.
Workforce development visioning critical to region’s future
We hear it every time we meet with our members. Of all of the challenges that they face, one of the most critical is the workforce issue. The issue varies from business to business. Some have positions they could fill if they could find the right employee. Others have a hard time retaining good employees once they find them, and many feel the current workers do not have the appropriate skills that are necessary to be successful contributing employees.
