Chamber Member of the Week: The Skin Therapist

Madlyn Murphy launched Mad Aesthetics out of her sister’s salon on 18th Street more than three years ago. After exponential growth, she elected to rebrand and secure a new location on Emory Drive this past summer, adjusting the name to The Skin Therapist.

Murphy began the business when she was only 19, and it has evolved to boast more than 1,200 clients. The spa proudly tailors treatments and regimens to each individual’s needs, wants, and budget within a wide array of services.

“At The Skin Therapist, our main goal is to ensure that everyone who walks through our doors receives more than just a treatment but a working knowledge on how they can best care for their skin at home,” Murphy said. “We carry some of the best products on the market, but they won’t do you any good if you don’t know how to use them properly.”

Services typically begin with complimentary skin consultations that Murphy said offer a detailed assessment and analysis of one’s skin.

“Our assessments are comprehensive and allow us to tailor a skincare regime and treatments plan that will be most suitable for you and your skin concerns and goals,” she said.

From there, she and her team can guide you in the direction of facials, microneedling, skin revision treatment, or any culmination of the three. They also offer an acne boot camp.

First-time mini facials are available to those pressed on time but still wanting to rejuvenate their skin. They are customizable and range from targeted extractions and dermaplane to chemical peels, enzyme therapy, and soothing masks. They also offer full facials.

“A more relaxing experience than our express treatment, the full facial features a double cleanse, massage on face, neck, and shoulders, enzymes, corrective acids if needed, and our antioxidants and SPF to complete the treatment,” Murphy said.

The Skin Therapist also specializes in microneedling, a noninvasive procedure designed to stimulate the body’s natural ability to generate collagen, elastin, and other building blocks of healthy skin.

“A single microchanneling treatment creates hundreds of thousands of microchannels,” Murphy said. “In response to each micro-injury, an inflammatory healing process begins, which initiates the formation of new collagen. Over time, the repeated healing process improves the surface texture and the overall appearance of the skin.”

Murphy said the service helps to improve everything from fine lines and wrinkles to acne and surgical scarring, sun damage, dark spots, stretch marks, firms, tightens, and tones skin.

The spa also features skin revision treatments, which Murphy said are “perfect for anyone and everyone.” Murphy and her team recommend those in packages of six to maximize results in backflushing toxins and build-up in the desmosome areas between cells.

Murphy said that the services are not just for women; there are increasingly more men that are accessing the services.

“Whenever I was purchasing the building, I was working with a lot of men,” she said. “They were like, ‘Are you kidding me? This is your business plan, and you’re always booked.’ Even our landscapers have ventured in. This would be a hit in the back of a barbershop.”

Murphy attributes much of their success to the Owensboro community. She moved away for a year but missed it too much.

“I feel like we don’t have anything like this, and we absolutely need it,” she said. “The support from the community has been overwhelming. We have had so much love and support.”

The Skin Therapist website – which can be accessed here – provides more detailed information on the services. It also features an online store, blog, client forms, skin quizzes, and online booking.

Murphy and her crew take pride in ensuring that their client’s skin is their priority.

“Here at The Skin Therapist, we’re obsessed with skin,” Murphy said. “It’s our mission to provide our clients knowledge-based, expert-level skincare. Using only the best professional and medical-grade products, we personalize every service to help you reach your skincare goals & love the skin you’re in.”
