Hundreds Expected at ‘Shop Owensboro’ Event Saturday

Shop Owensboro is a local take on the national American Express movement Small Business Saturday, an effort that encourages people to shop small and bring more holiday shopping to small businesses the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

The Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce along with sponsor Independence Bank began Shop Owensboro five years ago.

Chamber President and CEO Candance Castlen Brake champions small business because of its impact on the local economy.

“Every dollar spent locally will turn over three to five times in this community,” Brake said.

Those wishing to participate in Shop Owensboro are encouraged to grab a free Shop Owensboro bag from the Highway 54 or Frederica Street Independence Bank locations on Saturday. Doors will open at 9 a.m., but shoppers are encouraged to arrive early. In previous years the 500 shopping bags have been given out in less than 15 minutes, according to Chamber officials.

Shopping bags will include coupons and discounts to participating stores along with hidden gift certificates for some lucky shoppers. The bags will also include maps with participating stores, including hours of operation and contact information, and Shop Owensboro BINGO cards.
