Red, White & Blue forum is Thursday

Actor Spano will attend in support of Linderman

Politics moves off the televisions, radios, billboards and newspaper ads and onto the front lawn of the Daviess County Courthouse at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce’s Red, White and Blue political forum, which is sponsored by Big Rivers Electric Corp., will bring candidates from seven races together for a chance to meet the voters.

Most of the candidates are expected to attend the event in what’s called “People’s Square” in front of the courthouse.

“This unique format is a perfect opportunity to get out and see candidates for nearly every major race in the community,” Candance Brake, the chamber’s president and CEO, said Monday. “The courthouse lawn gives the event the grass-roots feel that we believe perfectly represents elections. The people gather to hear those willing to serve and decide who best fits their values and who will most effectively implement their priorities. We hope we have a great crowd to come together and celebrate this sacred duty.”

Democrats are bringing in Joe Spano, an actor known best for his roles as Lt. Henry Goldblume on “Hill Street Blues” and FBI Special Agent Tobias C. Fornell on “NCIS,” to campaign for Hank Linderman for the 2nd District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Donna Haynes. local Democratic chairwoman, said Spano will be at the courthouse and then address a “Truth Matters” rally and potluck at Democratic headquarters, 233 Williamsburg Square.

At the courthouse, candidates for Daviess County district judge, clerk and jailer; Owensboro city commissioner; Kentucky House of Representatives from the 7th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th districts; Kentucky Senate; and U.S. House of Representatives will speak.

The congressional candidates will get five minutes each to speak. All others will get two minutes.

The National Weather Service says temperatures should be in the low 50s on Thursday with mostly cloudy skies.

The chamber says, “We expect attendees to show respect to all candidates. No heckling will be tolerated.”

Challengers will speak first. If there is no incumbent in a race, candidates will speak in alphabetical order.

The Fraternal Order of Police will be preparing free hot dogs and hamburgers for the crowd.

The Red, White and Blue event is a successor to Thomas “Red” Saltsman’s annual Red’s Picnic in Sorgho, which lasted from 1958 until his death in 2005.
