Chamber Member of the Week: Paint Headquarters

Paint Headquarters has been a mainstay in the Owensboro community since David Baker opened its doors in 1995. Now approaching 30 years in business, the locally owned paint store offers everything from architectural coatings to window treatments.

The store is surrounded by competitors such as Sherwin-Williams and PPG. James Warren, the current manager of Paint Headquarters, reflects on the store’s unique position in the community.

“David was the only locally owned paint store here for at least the last 20 years,” Warren said. “And that’s still true today.”

Warren himself is a relative newcomer to the paint business, having transitioned from a healthcare career.

“My wife and I were customers long before I became involved,” he said. “We were buying paint from David even before we could afford to because the products here make anyone, from professional painters to amateurs, look good.”

Paint Headquarters offers a broad range of products, including paints for interior and exterior projects, stains for decks and hardwood floors, and even wallpaper and blinds. While they no longer have an in-house decorator, former decorator Shannon Huckett remains closely connected to the store, often taking on color-matching and design projects as needed.

“We can match stains for hardwood floors, stair treads, and doors — things that get very technical,” Warren said. “It takes a special touch. David taught the team everything they know, and it’s almost like an art form.”

Warren expressed gratitude for the community’s support, which has allowed the store to thrive.

“I’m very thankful for the people who are loyal to this place,” he said. “Owensboro really does take care of its own. People here want to buy local, and that’s something we truly appreciate.”

Even in retirement, Baker remains a fixture, dropping by the store regularly to lend a hand.

“David hasn’t totally shut the door,” Warren noted. “He’s in and out, helping us whenever we need him.”

As Paint Headquarters looks ahead to its 30th anniversary, Warren is confident that the store will continue to serve the Owensboro community with the same dedication and care that has defined it since 1995.
