Senator McConnell spoke on a variety of topics, ranging from the war in Ukraine to the upcoming election.

He also took time to reflect on his career.

“Without the people of Kentucky I wouldn’t have stayed there this long and without my colleagues I wouldn’t have become the longest serving Senate leader in American history, so I’m full of gratitude,” McConnell said.

Senator McConnell announced earlier this year that he will step down as Senate Minority Leader in November. He’s the longest serving Senate leader in U.S. history. He will still serve as a Senator until his term ends in January 2027.

The Senator also looked back at some of the hardest decisions he had to make as the party’s leader.

“The most dramatic decision I made when I was the majority leader was to not fill the supreme court vacancy in the middle of the 2016 election,” McConnell said.

Senator McConnell also talked about the importance of working across party lines, something he says he did with the infrastructure bill.

“I think when you have divided government, which by the way most of the time I’ve been in the Senate we’ve had divided government, I think the American people are saying we’re not in love with either side, we know you have big differences, but why don’t you look at the things you can agree on and do those. That’s the approach I’ve taken whether we’re in the the minority or the majority, some issues deserve bi-partisan support,” McConnell said.

Senator McConnell took time to take pictures with people in attendance after the event.
