Chamber Member of the Week: WKTG – 93.9
WKTG traces its conception back to 1949 in Madisonville, adopting different call letters throughout the years. Found on the radio dial at 93.9 or online, the station plays a blend of classic and new rock.
The station integrated itself into the Owensboro community in 1998 when they built a new tower halfway between Madisonville and Owensboro. President and General Manager Bob Kelley said the construction of the tower and the addition of high-definition technology have increased their reach and enhanced their quality.
“When we built the tower in 1998, we were able to become a real regional radio station,” Kelley said. “We’re one of the few HD radio stations in the area. It sounds amazing when you listen on an HD receiver.”
Compared to standard AM and FM radio bands, HD radio offers better sound quality while allowing stations to add more programming via additional channels broadcasted “alongside” a station’s primary frequency.
Chocked full of talent and classic rock, the station’s lineup begins in the mornings with Bill McClane, followed by an Out-to-Lunch show by Aaron Bone.
“Bill has done a lot of stand-up comedy and ventriloquism with his dummy, Rusty the Redneck, in many nightclubs in the area,” Kelley said. “Aaron’s Out-to-Lunch show is a midday, all-request show.”
Steve Gorman, former drummer for The Black Crowes, highlights the eccentric nighttime line-up. Gorman is originally from Hopkinsville and broadcasts the show Steve Gorman Rocks live from Nashville each evening.
The studio also proudly features every University of Kentucky basketball and football broadcast.
